Most residential lamp types and the corresponding lighting fixtures are designed for an ambient temperature of around 25 oC. Lighting fixtures (and electronics) are manufactured in several temperature grades. Generally, these are:
- Commercial: 0 ° to 70 °C
- Industrial: −40 ° to 85 °C

Since the lifetime of a LED is correlated to the ambient temperatures but also required to pass a government-required lifetime expectation (LM 79). The “approved” working temperatures in the design of a LED fixture can be restricted to residential expectations – far below even commercial use temperature expectations. Some old lighting technologies work well in extreme locations, but lose the inherent value of the LED technology, including vibration tolerance, wavelength specificity, and longevity.
