Innovative Canadian Tech Company Lights the Way for NASA
After stringent testing, NASA has chosen a small, below-the-radar Canadian tech company, Nemalux LED Lighting, to provide innovative Industrial LED lighting for its Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California.
Built in 1956, the Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California is an impressive example of engineering and design. As part of its continuous improvement program, the facility has selected Nemalux’s XCANLED and GSLED systems to increase existing light levels, decrease maintenance cost, and improve visibility for a wide range of cameras and sensors.
The Wind Tunnel Division is using the XCANLED hazardous location floodlights to provide industrial illumination inside the tunnel and linear low profile GSLED hazardous location lights to replace fluorescent fixtures inside the confined space surrounding the tunnel. The Nemalux Industrial flood lights maintain optimal case temperature when exposed to the low-pressure environment of the Wind Tunnel during normal operation. While preventing excessive glare, the GSLED linear lights deliver exceptionally high-quality light, allowing operators close proximity without experiencing glare discomfort. The low voltage operation of both fixtures provides additional safety to the NASA personnel and removes the dangers associated with high voltage lines in explosion-proof confined spaces.
For the past 10 years, Nemalux LED Lighting located in Calgary, Alberta has developed and tested state-of-the-art LED (light-emitting diodes) lights for hazardous location and explosion proof applications. Companies have welcomed the switch to LED lighting because of its significant advantages: reduced power and maintenance costs, product longevity, safety, and environmental responsibility. “Our specialized LEDs have been designed and tested for Class 1 Division 2 and Class 1 Division 1 industrial application and lasts up to 10 years with no maintenance or bulb changes,” says Jode Himann, Nemalux’s CEO.

The contract award confirms that Nemalux has a higher quality and competitive advantage as the NASA purchasing procedures and the buy American “ARRA” agreement has created an increased amount of supplier research, filtering, and selection process.
