The Upper Midwest is the northern portion of the region known as the U.S. Midwest and is comprised of Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, South Dakota, and North Dakota.

Like the Midwest, agriculture is a major industry in the Upper Midwest. It has also traditionally been the heart of the U.S. auto industry, centered in Detroit, Michigan. The Upper Midwest experiences large swings between summer and winter temperatures, making farming challenging. Sioux Falls has an average 25 days of above 90 °F (32 °C) temperatures and 45 days of below 5 °F (−15 °C) temperatures every year. Mitchell, South Dakota is even more extreme reaching record highs of 116 °F (47 °C) and record lows of −39 °F (−39 °C). The Upper Midwest growing season is shorter, cooler and drier than neighboring states to the south and east. The region’s western boundary is too dry to support growing non-irrigated crops with the exception of a few crops such as small grains or hay grass.

Mining

Nemalux lighting applications are designed for all mining environments. Lighting is critical in mines if you look at the history of safe lighting in Mining, as staff relies upon the correct light profile to avoid physical hazards and other dangers. As a carefully crafted beam profile can increase productivity in open mines, it can also improve perception in underground mines. By focusing the tuned portable light beam on a working face, you will allow miners to improve coal or ore shearing.

Open Pit Mines

Open-pit mines are naturally large areas that need to be illuminated. Equipment such as crushers sits on large open areas, crushing quarried stones and generating clouds of dust. The AR and XR are ideal for operating in these extreme environments with an industrial design that enables them to operate at an optimal temperature range even in the presence of constant grime. Larger fin spacing, triple-coated surface, and a surface designed to support debris shedding enable operation in the dustiest environment. IP 66 & 67 ingress protection allows operators to hose down the luminaires in the unlikely event that debris does accumulate. Their large lumen output, especially the AR, allows it to be used in high mast applications to illuminate wide areas with the lowest possible power.

Underground Mines

The BL is a replacement for vapor-tight fluorescent lights that have long been used in the mining industry. Following the tradition of innovation in the mining industry, the BL improves upon fluorescents in a lifetime, lumens output, durability, and power consumption. A thru wiring mode allows BL’s to be chained together in long runs as commonly practiced in the mining industry, following the contours of long mining tunnels.  The large surface area of the BL fixture results in a very high cooling rate, giving it exceptional performance in the elevated temperatures of mines.

General Manufacturing

Nemalux offers lighting solutions for the factory, whether it is high bay general lighting or focused task lighting. Factories require proper lighting for workers to do their jobs effectively. Many still use older HID and fluorescent lights but with climate change awareness and efforts to reduce carbon emissions, old factories are being upgraded to LED lighting, and new factories specified with  LED luminaires. A number of factories are also installing daylighting systems to take advantage of as much natural light as possible. However, in many industries, production can operate night shifts, relying solely on artificial lighting. With so many possible types of factories, each with its own specific lighting requirements, the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) handbook is the go-to reference to determine the optimal lighting for a specific industry.  General light levels for sections found in a typical factory are given below:

Nemalux provides a number of lighting solutions for general manufacturing and factory lighting.

The MR, XR, and AR series of luminaires range from low bay to high bay respectively, with increasing lumens outputs from 3K starting with the MR model up to 48K for the AR hazardous location model. Secondary optics provides numerous factory-configured, optical profiles and mounting options, which can reduce fixture counts to light a large plant area by up to 30% compared to equivalent competitors’ products. All are rated for a minimum of IP66 ingress protection. For exterior plant use, the AR model is useful for flooding large exterior areas such as parking lots or large work yards. For replacement of legacy HID or fluorescent lights, the MR is a direct replacement for 75-150 Watts HID lamps, while the NL is a direct replacement for fluorescent lighting, and the BL is a direct replacement for vapor-tight fluorescent lamps.

For internal lighting of control panels, either general or hazardous location, the linear GS DC model is an ideal luminaire fitting into compact spaces.

Agriculture and Food Processing

Nemalux offers the AR, an NSF-certified luminaire that is designed to excel in the harsh food processing environment, whether a meat processing plant, the humid, wet environment of a canning factory, or dairy processing. The AR is rated IP66/67 and its industrially designed package is shaped to prevent biofouling. It is a high bay fixture that can be mounted 25 to 100 feet above the factory floor or in a work yard. The high color rendering index allows food quality and safety inspectors to discriminate true colors. Marine

Nemalux AR and GS fixture is designed for harsh marine salt and freshwater environments. Saltwater corrosion is a major environmental problem for equipment installed to illuminate ships, waterways, and marine ports and terminals. When upgrading marine infrastructure, look for the UL1598A, and stricter ABS certification. A number of Nemalux luminaires are certified to UL1598A and the Nemalux GS (available in both AC and DC models) linear model is one of the few linear luminaires in the industry to have an ABS marine certification. All marine certified fixture housings are fabricated from a copper-free and marine-grade aluminum alloy. For models such as the versatile MR low bay, all electronics are well protected from environmental impacts and contaminants inside a pressure-equivalized IP66/67 rated enclosure. A multilayer powder coat prevents degradation of the alloy while allowing deployment in corrosive outdoor and indoor locations. Increased fin spacing promotes debris shedding as well as optimized airflow to maintain low operating temperatures for the internal power supply and LEDs.

The GS’s unique design makes it one of the only linear models on the market that qualifies for the ABS standard. Linear luminaires are notoriously difficult to achieve ABS rating because the different materials used in their construction have different coefficients of thermal expansion. This mismatch in a long body creates gaps that compromise ingress protection. The GS’s unique design prevents these gaps from forming, even with different materials. This has allowed the GS linear to be IP68, 69, and ABS compliant, and be spec’ed into unique marine and underwater locations such as along docks, offshore platforms, and walkway/ground lighting. Pulp & Paper

Different areas of a pulp mill require different lighting levels and different features to withstand environmental factors.  The most dangerous areas in a Pulp & Paper plant are those where combustible materials such as paper or wood (sawdust) pose an explosion or fire risk. Combustible dust has a small particle size, which makes them ignitable and can lead to flash fires (deflagration) and explosions. Nemalux offers a variety of lighting solutions to replace and retrofit luminaires commonly used in Pulp & Paper plants. Most models come in Class I, Div 2 (zone 2) option for hazardous ignitable dust environments. Oil & Gas

Nemalux luminaires are workhorses of the O+G industry. All luminaires are available for hazardous location applications.

In upstream applications, high lumens luminaires such as the AR or ZLM, are ideal for high mast applications such as drilling towers. The ZLM design employs active ventilation to reduce its weight, giving it one of the lighting industrys’ highest lumens/pound ratios. The ZLM comes as a general location single, double, or quad, and these can be stacked together as well. A single weighs 10kg and outputs 28,840 lumens (IESNA type 2), double weighs 20kg and outputs 57,680 lumens (IESNA type 2) and a quad weighs 40 kg and outputs 115,350 lumens (IESNA type 2).  Along with very directional optics for concentrated illumination. It is ideal for use in high mast, area lighting on mobile, remote drilling rigs. The low weight/high lumens ZLM is easily raised to the top of the lightweight tower for wide-area lighting. For maintenance, it is easily lowered to the ground where it can be serviced.  Where a more permanent hazardous location-approved lighting solution is required and where luminaire weight is not an issue, the AR class I div 2 luminaire weighs 16.4 kg and outputs 31,670 lumens (IESNA type 2). If no optics is required and the general location, the AR-H-Gen can output 48,940 lumens (IESNA type 2).

In other upstream applications, Nemalux GS DC luminaires have been used in equipment controller cabs in oilwell command centers during oil and gas drilling operations, where clear visibility is required. In drilling site temporary shelters,  the BL has been used as a replacement for vapor tight fluorescent lights. Its wire-thru capability allows multiple units to be strung together in a long line. During nighttime operation, good color rendering is important so that workers can differentiate colors and hazard identification. Properly engineered lighting systems enhance overall areal perspective and visibility while minimizing glare and shadowing. In oil and gas environments, safety is paramount.

In midstream applications, Nemalux luminaires find many applications on tank farms. Each storage tank in a tank farm has walkways and staircases that require illumination for safe nighttime access. The MR  is an ideal luminaire for such applications. It is rated Class I Div 2 and is ideal for low bay applications mounting at heights of 8 feet or less, with versatile optical profiles and mounting options for convenient sparing. Nemalux also offers a variety of support structures to enable mounting the MR onto the walkway including swivel poles, straight poles, articulated support (ARTSU), and handrail mount to fit every walkway possibility. Turnkey lighting packages make installation a snap, saving on installation costs.  Staircases and walkways leading to the top of the tank require good lighting, for safe movement, regular visual inspection, and other maintenance duties necessary to ensure the safe operation of each tank. Nemalux offers a variety of tank top lighting systems with options of custom solar power design with the GS DC linear luminaire, or for non-solar applications, the MR or EXC. large yards in tank farms can be illuminated with the MR or the AR high bay luminaire flooding the yard and tank farm auxiliary buildings can be illuminated with XR-20 high bays inside or flood light tilted outside the building. In compressor applications, the GS DC series of linear luminaires allow mounting in walkways and for low voltage control and distribution panels. The XCANLED series is used extensively in compressor station applications, where it was interfaced to a custom control panel that changed the colors of the luminaire to alert persons of an H2S alarm. XCANLEDs have also been used to replace High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps in remote compressor applications.
