The Dark Sky protocol that protects wildlife from unnatural nightlight, lighting to keep shift workers alert, lights that repel pests, or horticultural lighting tuned to specific species and stages of plant growth are just the tip of the iceberg for wavelength specific lighting applications. Photonics has wide applications in the health and wellness industry from lights that affects the human circadian rhythms to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder to Jet lag.  Visible red light from wavelengths of 630 to 700 nm penetrates tissue to a depth of 10 mm and is beneficial in helping heal wounds, infections and scars while infrared can penetrate to depths of 40 mm for treating organs and ailments affecting bones, joints and deep muscle tissues. Lighting designers carefully choose the spectral content of light sources in order to affect the mood and alertness level of workers. Studies show that short wavelength blue light can improve performance and alertness during both day and night by suppressing sleep hormone melatonin and shifting circadian rhythms by about three hours. This is important especially for workers working night shifts or long hours. The proper lighting can prevent workplace accidents in industrial plants or long haul driving by keeping workers alert.

BioFuel & Agriculture

LEDs find wide application in biofuel and indoor agricultural and indoor farming systems. Metal halide lamps have been traditionally used for growing biofuel crops but they are very power hungry. New LED lamps can reproduce the same critical wavelengths but use just 35% of the energy. Micro-algae and other plants grow more effectively with a combination red and blue light. Vertical hydroponics growers are working with large lighting companies like Philips to develop custom lighting formulas for growing each specific plant type. Since LEDs run cooler, they can be placed closer to the plants, ensuring a more uniform illumination. New indoor grow operations use less energy than conventional farming, producing organically grown and chemical free produce.

The function of machine vision is to light an object so that the reflected light maximizes the contrast of a specific feature, resulting in an image captured by the imaging device which can be used the image processor to make a pass/fail decision. Light will be reflected, transmitted and absorbed differently depending on the characteristics of the object being imaged. The spectral content of the light source is carefully chosen to increase the contrast of the image, bringing out the features clearly for machine vision algorithms to process them effectively. Light sources for machine vision can be any one of fluorescent, quartz halogen, LED, metal halide, xenon or High Pressure Sodium. The choice of sources depends on the specific application requirements, defined by 4 fundamental parameters of geometry, structure/pattern, sample and background wavelength and filters.

Photonics finds wide application in the food processing industry. The area of hyper-spectral analysis identifies a spectral fingerprint for each of many types of potential food contaminants such as dangerous bacteria,  a host of pathogens and external objects like metals, rocks, etc. Applied to a production line with machine or manual inspection allows culling of potential dangerous contaminants. Lighting for food inspection often requires special sealed lighting that can withstand being hosed down during cleaning and decontamination processes. A CRI of 99 is used for food inspection

The Color Rendering Index (CRI) is a measure of how close a light source is to natural white light from the sun. The higher the CRI number, the closer the match. High CRI full spectrum lighting dramatically improves the appearance of objects. This is important in places like retail stores, super-markets, exhibits, museums and galleries where presentation and appearance are critical. High CRI lighting is also important in areas such as hospitals, textile or other industries where color differentiation is crucial in work performance. High CRI LEDs are ideal for applications which require sustainable lighting that requires maintaining a high quality of natural lighting.

UV Applications

Ultraviolet light for health, infection control, industrial processing, verification and criminology applications

Ultraviolet lights have many photonic applications. They are often used for bacterial disinfections of surfaces or surgical equipment in health facilities, to kill dangerous bacteria in surgical, dental and emergency situations. During the Ebola crisis, UV lights played an important role in protecting front line health workers. UV lights are also important for curing of resins and adhesives and decomposing chemicals in industrial applications. In the verification and forgery analysis industry, UV lights are used to detect signs of authentic as well as forged bank notes, credit card markings or forged changes to documents and art paintings. Specific proteins leave a UV fingerprint in urine and this is useful in the identification pet urine spots or in signs of rodents. Long wavelength UV light can identify oil leaks by different, easily distinguishable, fluorescent colors for engine oil, differential, wheel bearing, air conditioning system and brake fluid leaks. Criminologists use it for crime scene inspection of bodily fluids and for hydrocarbon detection in arson cases.
