LEDs have become considerably brighter and we will need to be more conservative than the article would suggest. Here is the updated safety guidelines for working with our fixtures.

These exposure limits are based on 60s or shorter viewing times, so anyone working close up on our fixtures running at full power should be wearing safety glasses. While we might not be exceeding safety thresholds, these fixtures are definitely bright enough to cause discomfort. If the LEDs are over powered, the hazard could be higher than indicated on Cree’s advisory, as they classify according to the typical (fairly low) drive currents.

ROYAL BLUE LEDs: The threshold for eye damage is much lower for blue light than for white broadband illumination, and with high power Royal LEDs there is a real risk of causing permanent eye damage unless adequate eye protection is used.
